The Cuckoo Clocks in the Museum of Time with Colman Curran
One of many spectacular cuckoo clocks which are now part of the collection of timepieces in the Waterford Museum of Time.
Colman Curran is a long-standing member of Horology Ireland and is the principal driving force behind the Museum of Time in Waterford. For anyone with an interest in timepieces in Ireland, this is a must-see collection. The prior extraordinary gift of clocks and watches donated by David Boles has now been augmented with the latest addition - an unrivalled collection of cuckoo clocks which is probably the largest in the world. This will be the subject of our November meeting.
Artistry of Pocket Watches
A talk entitled Artistry of Pocket Watches with Adrian Le Harivel
A beautiful gold and enamel pocket watch by the renowned Dublin watch and clock maker John Crosthwaite from the late 18th century. Originally from County Kildare, Crosthwaite spent many years in Dublin and had a very successful and wide-ranging career including the manufacture of watches, domestic clocks, turret clocks and precision timepieces.
Adrian Le Harivel was a Curator at the National Gallery of Ireland for forty two years and came to timepieces through their depiction in paintings. He has lectured extensively on this subject and is himself a collector. In this talk, he focuses on the pocket watch and artistry of the creators as well as trade cards and chatelaines used to attach them to clothes. This will be an opportunity to see the work of some of the greatest makers whose watches are now in museums from America to Switzerland. He will also show fine examples that are still in the realm of the ordinary collector.

David Wood-Heath is a Member of the Institution of Public Health Engineers and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management. He is a collector and expert in engine turning and horology.

This fine flat-bed tower clock was manufactured by James Waugh & Sons who were located in James’s Street and other addresses in Dublin in the first part of the 19th century.

Tower Clocks with Keith Scobie-Youngs
We are privileged to have a presentation by Keith Scobie-Youngs a renowned expert in the field of turret clocks. Keith graduated in Horology from the School of Jewellery and Silversmithing and worked at Public Clocks in London. He established the Cumbria Clock Company over thirty years ago. This has been highly successful and, with the assistance of other horologists, he maintains over 1,400 church and public clocks. Keith has worked on the clock at Salisbury Cathedral, the Astronomical Clock at Hampton Court Palace and the Westminster Clock, better known as Big Ben. He was sometime Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, is a Council Member of the Antiquarian Horological Society and also a Fellow of the British Horological Institute.
The clock above is signed Lewes Pridham, Sandford Fecit and dates from 1708.

This wide-ranging talk will demonstrate how clever machines produced beautiful music before the phonograph was invented. It will also suggest the most satisfying types to acquire, depending on one’s budget. The speaker is David Boles, our very own renowned and distinguished collector and horologist.
